If the citizens' protest is suppressed, Georgia risks losing a significant portion of European Union (EU) support, warned MEP Siegfried Mureshan. He said this on the air of the Romanian TV channel Digi 24.
However, the MEP expressed hope that this would not be necessary. "I hope that this will not happen, because we also want to have safe, stable and prosperous states in our neighborhood. But if the impact of undemocratic tendencies in Georgia is noticeable, the EU will be forced to reduce its support," he said.
Mureshan noted that last year Georgia already lagged behind Moldova and Ukraine, but today Tbilisi's problems have become even more noticeable. According to him, the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" is aimed at intimidating civil society, which is contrary to European standards.

The U.S. State Department appealed to the Georgian authorities amid protests in the country over the law on foreign agents and warned about the consequences of approving the initiative. State Department spokesman Ned Price announced it.
He said the law would jeopardize Georgia's Euro-Atlantic future and would damage Tbilisi's relations with its strategic partners.
Price also urged the Georgian government to respect the freedom of peaceful assembly and peaceful protest. At the same time, the spokesman said that all sides should show restraint and avoid any escalatory actions.
