The countries of the eastern flank of NATO have declared the need to expand the American military presence in the region. This is reported by The Washington Post.
According to the publication, currently about 100 thousand American troops are stationed throughout Europe. At the same time, the "more vulnerable" US allies consider this number insufficient. Thus, the Baltic states and Eastern Europe called on the United States to increase defense production in order to accelerate the supply of weapons to them.
In particular, the request refers to HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), Reapers attack drones, counter-battery radars. As noted by the Chancellor of the Ministry of Defense of Estonia Kusti Salm, these weapons will be required to deter Russia. The author of the material recalled that in recent months, many of the countries of the region have supplied Ukraine with weapons from their own stocks. In a conversation with WP, an unnamed Pentagon representative admitted that Western countries will need to replenish this military potential at some point. However, he did not specify how long it would take.
Earlier it was reported that the US Air Force decided to send fifth-generation Boeing F-22 Raptor fighters to Poland to support the NATO mission and deter Russia. Warsaw also decided to buy 116 decommissioned Abrams tanks from Washington to replace the Russian T-72s given to Kiev. The first deliveries should take place early next year.
