Members of the US Democratic Party want to introduce criminal penalties for spreading false information about elections. This is reported by The New York Times (NYT).
It is specified that it is also planned to create automatic voter registration systems. In addition, the innovations involve pre-registration of teenagers to participate in elections and the return of the right to vote to former prisoners. Democrats are preparing to go on the offensive next year, the newspaper writes.
It is noted that this is due to the results of the midterm elections to the US Congress, as well as the results of voting for the determination of state governors. "In the midterm elections, voters across the country rejected the most pronounced Republican candidates who used false statements about the American elections and promised to change the rules in the interests of their party," the publication says. Democrats perceived their election victory as the right to make voting easier and more accessible, the NYT points out.
On November 8, the main voting day for the midterm elections to both houses of Congress took place in the United States. They elected 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 out of 100 senators.
