Military tension between the DPRK and South Korea risks leading to serious clashes between the two countries, said Alexander Vorontsov, head of the Department of Korea and Mongolia at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In conversation with the "Tape.<url>" he described the possible development of the situation.

The South Korean military failed to shoot down five DPRK drones that violated the country's border with more than a hundred shells, the Yonhap news agency writes. According to the expert, the situation is developing according to a negative scenario.

"Military observers have been admitting for a long time, for several months, that with such a development of the situation, local clashes are possible. Maneuvers from both sides are getting closer and closer to the demilitarized zone, an accidental flight of some projectile or something else, towards which shots are often fired from both sides - all this can lead to an unprogrammed incident," Vorontsov believes.

Each side calls its actions defensive, the other perceives them as a dangerous provocation, the political scientist explained.

"Unfortunately, this trend continues to develop, which in principle potentially threatens to some local clashes. But at the same time, it is important that the parties are not yet interested in the emergence of a major uncontrolled conflict. All this can be stopped and deployed in a different direction with the beginning of the dialogue, but the dialogue is not yet visible," concluded Alexander Vorontsov.
